Air Filtration
Air Filter Recommendations
Simply Sheet Metal recommends air filters (furnace filters) with a MERV 7 - 8 or MPR 600 designation. This MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) or MPR (Microparticle Performance Rating) will collect mold spores, cooking dust, hair spray, furniture polish, pollen, dust mites, spray paint, carpet fibers, cement dust, and pet dander.
We do not recommend using filters with higher ratings as the higher rated filters will cause excess strain on your air handling equipment by introducing more restriction.
More information on MERV 8 vs. MERV 11 air filters.
Air Filter Replacement Intervals
The typical recommended replacement interval for disposable filters:
1" thick filter = 90 days
2" thick filter = 120 days
4" thick filter = 180 days
5" thick filter = 360 days
*Intervals are approximate and greatly depend on the environment. If you have animals these intervals will be reduced.
Simply Sheet Metal recommends checking the filter at least once a month to ensure maximum efficiency of the air handling system.
System Performance
Possible causes of poor system performance:
Blocked floor registers and/or return air grilles
Your supply air floor registers or return air grilles could potentially be blocked by any number of items, including shoes, clothes, blankets, boxes, dressers, shelves, furniture, animals and even young humans. It could even be as simple as the damper within the supply air register has been closed.
Correct air filter orientation
All duct system air filters have a direction of airflow indicated on the air filter. This arrow will need to point toward the return (intake) side of the air handling equipment.
Clogged/dirty air filter
One of the most commonly overlooked restrictions within forced air duct systems is the air filter. As simple as it is, it is far too often forgotten about. Replace your disposable filter and clean your permanent filters at the factory recommended intervals. Typically the recommended replacement intervals for a disposable filter are 90 days for a 1” thick filter and 360 days for a 5” thick filter, if you have animals these intervals are reduced.
Wrong air filter (too high a MERV rating or MPR)
Air filters play a critical role in how well your duct system performs. A common cause of reduced airflow or premature equipment failure is using a filter that's too efficient for the system.
The higher the MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) or MPR (Microparticle Performance Rating), the more restrictive the filter becomes. While high-efficiency filters capture finer particles, they also limit airflow, which increases system strain and reduces overall performance.
Simply Sheet Metal recommends filters with no higher than a MERV 8 or MPR 600 designation.
The duct system lacks the minimum volume of return air
Does your home have enough return air duct and/or grilles to allow the amount of air expelled from your air handling equipment to be cycled back through the system? With an air handler/heat pump system, the amount of return air to be cycled through the system is doubly important.
Your air handling equipment needs to breathe just as you do.
Ductwork, ductwork, ductwork
Last but certainly not least, because it is by far the most important, the air ducts.
A defining factor as to how air flows around your house, how well it flows, how evenly it flows through each vent, and how efficient your air handling equipment will be is directly regulated by and ultimately susceptible to the duct size, length, and of course the duct system design/layout.

Maintenance
Proper maintenance is essential to keep your HVAC system operating efficiently, safely, and with consistent air quality.
Exterior Wall Cap Inspection
Inspect exterior exhaust and fresh air wall caps monthly to ensure they are clear of obstructions such as leaves, grass, or snow. During winter, make sure frost or snow does not block the wall caps or build up on the bird screen. Unrestricted airflow at these points is vital for proper ventilation and system safety.
Dryer Vent Cleaning
Dryer vent cleaning is critical for both safety and performance. For homes with two occupants, cleaning should be completed annually. For households with three or more people, it should be done three times per year. Regular cleaning reduces the risk of fire and ensures your dryer operates at peak efficiency.
Condensate Drain Line Maintenance
Inspect and clean the condensate drain line annually. Check the drain spout and P-trap for blockages, mold, or kinks, and flush the line with warm soapy water. Replace any components that are worn, damaged, or unable to be cleaned. A clear drain line prevents water damage and ensures the system drains properly during cooling or dehumidification cycles.
Duct System Cleaning
Simply Sheet Metal recommends professional duct system cleaning every 2 to 3 years. Regular cleaning helps maintain airflow, system efficiency, and indoor air quality by preventing dust and debris buildup throughout the system.
